As an affiliated institute of the The Korea Heritage Service (Senior Executive Service), the institute provides one-stop service from the excavation and investigation of maritime cultural heritage to the conservation, research, exhibition, education, and promotion of these materials.
The planning and management division is responsible for the operation and administrative work of the institute. Mid-term and long-term development and major project plans are created, and the division is responsible for management of operation, evaluation, and outcomes of executive agencies, operation of the organization, human resources, funds, contracts, security, and affairs in the national assembly, education, promotion, homepage, institute facilities, and the creation, operations, etc. of research, exhibition environments, and convenience facilities.

Underwater Archaelogy Division
The underwater archaelogy division is responsible for the investigation and research of maritime cultural heritage. Based on maritime cultural heritage, it is responsible for the establishment of a comprehensive plan for conservation and management, indication, excavation, and the exploration, academic research, and development of investigation methods, usage and management of maritime excavation vessels, training of a professional workforce for underwater excavation, cooperation with domestic and international institutes, establishment of mid-term and long-term plans and major projects, operation, evaluation, and outcomes of executive agencies, improvement of the system for the organization, human resources, funds, contracts, support for policies, etc.

Maritime Heritage Research Division
The maritime heritage research division is a division that is responsible for the preservation, management, investigation, and research of maritime cultural heritage. It is also responsible for the establishment of a comprehensive research plan for maritime culture, research on maritime history, folklore, and life history, research and restoration project of traditional vessels, research on traditional shipbuilding and navigation techniques, and the establishment of conservation plans for maritime cultural heritage, research and analysis on preservation treatment, management of relics, operation of archives, domestic and international academic exchanges, etc.

The exhibition&education division is an organization that is responsible for the exhibition and education projects of the Mokpo National Maritime Museum, one of the branches of the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage. It is responsible for the creation of a comprehensive exhibition and education plan, establishment of the operations plan of the children’s maritime museum, research on exhibitions and education, management and operation of the exhibition hall, hosting of exhibits, information services on exhibits, development and operation of educational programs and cultural events, and the creation and operation of a domestic and international exchange network.

The west sea cultural heritage division is an organization that is responsible for exhibition and education projects and the research, conservation, and management of maritime cultural heritage in the Chungcheongnam-do Province and Gyeonggi-do Province in the Taean National Maritime Museum of the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage. Comprehensive plans are made regarding the exhibition and education on maritime cultural heritage in these regions, and it is responsible for the excavation, exploration, preservation treatment, analysis and research, restoration, and usage of recovered historical vessels, research on maritime cultural heritage, and the management of relics.
