The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage, which is responsible for investigation, research, exhibition and education with regard to maritime cultural heritages, has held special exhibitions on themes of maritime cultures each year. Ships are very important as the means of delivering maritime cultures. Numerous Goryeo ships were discovered and retrieved through underwater excavation, but, unfortunately, ships of Joseon dynasty have yet to be excavated. Given the situation, this year, we have prepared a special exhibition under the title of Traditional Ship in the Paintings of Joseon Dynasty. Among the ships featured in paintings are documentary and outstandingly artistic works designated as treasures. Themes of exhibition include "bridge built by connection ships," ships for use in running state affairs, ships in the play cultures. nd ferry boats and ships for fishing. Models of ships as pictured will be exhibited. Visitors will certainly enjoy viewing diverse Joseon ships that traveled in rivers and seas.
