In 2012, the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage is holding a special exhibition entitled a skate merchant Mun Sun-deuk’s Unexpected Drifting to Distant Asian Lands. At the exhibition, you will learn about the many hardships experienced by a skate merchant named Mun Sun-deuk some 210 years ago, after being swept away in a storm. The storm swept Mun Sun-deuk and they far away from home, to the seas near Heuksando Island and the Okinawa, the Philippines, and Macao. However, seaman Sun-deuk was full of wisdom. e late Mun Chae-ok, a descendant of Sun-deuk, preserved the records left by his ancestor as if they were precious jewels, and finally disclosed their existence. For this, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the late Mun Chae-ok.
