Gwaebul, the Buddha of Mihwangsa Temple in the Village at the edge of the southwestern sea of Korea, Embracing Peaple‘s Yearning with its Grand Beauty.
This painting depicts Shakyamuni Buddha as the main image sided by the Dragon King and the Dragon Maiden of the Sea that make offerings to the Buddha. Buddha is portrayed with a dignified facial expression and posture, while rays in variegated colors and two triads of seated Buddhas are symmetrically balanced.
The solemn and subdued atmosphere of this Gwaebul represents the characteristics of the eighreenth-century Buddhist paintings. It is rare to see both the Dragon King and the Dragon Maiden flanking Shakyamunu, which seems to have been associated with the founding myth of Mihwangsa Temple.
Inserting those god and goddess of the sea might have been affected by people‘s prayers. This Gwaebul was created by collaboration of seven monk painters of the eighteenth-century. Mihwangsa gwaebul has been recognized as the sacred treasure that granted one‘s wish if he or she saw the painting in person and brought rain if a rain calling ceremony was held in front of the painting.
