The anchor of the Sinan Shipwreck was accidentally discovered in 1972, about four years before the excavation of the submerged wreck. The anchor was actually being used as a fishing net sinker when it was reported in November 1976, a month after the start of the excavation of the Sinan Shipwreck, and was salvaged by the Sinan Shipwreck Excavation Team.

Generally, anchor are made of wood or stone, but this anchor is made of steel and has four barbed flukes shaped like hooks. Steel anchors were mostly made during the Song and Yuan periods, and were widely used during the Ming and Qing periods.

This exhibition is particularly meaningful in that it will present the Sinan Shipwreck together with its steel anchor, which has been kept at the Republic of Korea Naval Academy for the past forty years.

The steel anchor will eventually be returned to its original location in the Sinan Shipwreck which had shared joys and sorrows together. This exhibition is being held to celebrate the reunion of the Sinan Shipwreck and its anchor and to introduce Chinese anchors. It will offer a great opportunity for visitors to learn about the excellent nautical skills and shipbuilding technologies of ancient times.
