"MYEONG NYANG"
National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage prepared a special exhibition to introduce Jindo Myeongnyang strait underwater cultural assets excavation outcome. This exhibition is the outcome of the research from 2012 to 2014, which is only 5% of underwater remains in Myeongnyang strait and is scheduled to be continued to research. ‘Myeongnyang’ in our memory is occupied as the historical victory of Myeongnyang naval battle in september 16,1597. Many times we have met the story of Myeongnyang naval battle through education, literature, drama and the movie as well as stories of historical heroes.
However, as the result of underwater cultural assets excavation, not only the traces of Myeongnyang naval battle, but also lots of cultural assets from the ancient times to modern times have been poured out in Myeongnyang strait. Myeongnyang was an important sea route that connects the southern sea and the western sea, and strategic point, which was a busy sea route with many ships. But raging waves brought about lots of marine accidents. The biggest achievement of underwater cultural assets excavation investigation is the discovery of weapons and high-class celadon in a histocical site of Myeongnyang naval battle. We expect you to enjoy the story of sea route Myeongnyang through abundant historical traces of Myeongnyang strait in this special exhibition.
