Introduction

In 2007, when five shipwrecks and 28,000 artifacts were discovered off the coast of Daeseom and Mado Islands in Taean-gun County, an issue of rapid conservation and management was raised. As a result, the construction of a base facility to manage underwater archaeological surveying and underwater cultural heritage in the midwest sea region was promoted, which is the Taean National Maritime Museum of nowadays.

The Taean National Maritime Museum currently manages and utilizes eight shipwrecks and 30,000 artifacts recovered from the underwater excavations conducted in the waters of Incheon Metropolitan City, Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do Provinces. These represent the importance of the midwest sea region, which is nearly one-third of Korea's underwater cultural relics.
