The "> <"-shaped groove divides this wooden tag into the head and the body. The front and back are trimmed flat, and the front side, where the Chinese characters are written, is carved out more so that the edges are bevelled. Because of that, a person who wrote the characters probably tried to keep the strokes within the slanted surface.
